Ghost in the Cell Reaches 3.2 Million Cinema Viewers, Producer Prepares This
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian horror-comedy film “Ghost in the Cell” has recorded 3.2 million viewers since its debut in Indonesian cinemas on April 16th, 2026.
Producer Tia Hasibuan from Come and See Pictures announced the figure today at the opening of the “Macabre Art Installation Ghost in the Cell” event in the Melawai area, South Jakarta, on Saturday.
“If we look at the number of viewers of the film in Indonesia, as of today, it’s 3.2 million, most of whom are in Jakarta, as Jakarta has the most cinemas. We want, among other things, to bring the film’s viewers to enjoy this ‘art installation’ directly,” said Tia.
Tia said that the film, written and directed by Joko Anwar, is also expanding into international markets with the target of screenings in 86 countries.
“So, currently, besides Indonesia, we have screened it in Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand on May 7th, and Taiwan will be soon,” said Tia Hasibuan.
The management team targets that this international distribution process will be carried out gradually until the end of the year.
“Right now, we are preparing because each country has different screening dates. It seems that until the end of the year, there will still be countries that are just starting to screen it in their respective places. So, for now, we are focusing on that, country by country,” said Tia.
This success has prompted Come and See Pictures to immediately prepare the next project next year.
Tia said that the production house will adapt the story of “Ghost in the Cell” into a musical theatre performance.
“In fact, when Joko (Joko Anwar) wrote the screenplay, it was planned from the beginning that we would make it into a musical. That’s why the screenplay for this film is a bit different. By different, I mean the scenes are very few, but each scene is quite long, like a musical,” said Tia.
The production team will open public auditions to find new players for the musical project.
The total number of players being sought, Tia has not yet been able to disclose. “Ideally, the number of players for the musical should not be much different from the film,” said Tia.
