GHAS Demolished, Andre Rosiade Targets New Stadium Completion by January 2028

The Gelora Haji Agus Salim (GHAS) Stadium in Padang has officially entered the total demolition phase for a new AFC-standard stadium project. Demolition is targeted for completion by August 2026, while physical construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and be completed by January 2028 at the latest. This certainty was conveyed by Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission VI from the Gerindra Party, Andre Rosiade, during an inspection of the work in Padang on Tuesday (14/7/2026), accompanied by the Head of the Strategic Infrastructure Task Force for the Ministry of Public Works (PU) for West Sumatra, Rifi Firdaus, and the President Director of PT Hutama Karya, Kuntjoro. “Today we are accompanied by Task Force Head Mr Rifi and the President Director of Hutama Karya. Hutama Karya together with Adhi Karya have been appointed as the Operation Cooperation (KSO). The demolition target is August. The overall construction is targeted for completion by January 2028,” said Andre, who is also the General Chairman of the Minang Family Association (IKM). Based on a technical study by the Ministry of Public Works, the Haji Agus Salim Stadium building is no longer fit for mere renovation. Besides being decades old, the stadium was also affected by a major earthquake in 2009 and has never undergone comprehensive rehabilitation. Therefore, the government decided to build a new stadium from scratch. “The construction is not just a renovation, but a total reconstruction so that the stadium meets the standards required by the AFC,” he said. The new stadium is estimated to cost between IDR 340 billion and IDR 400 billion. It will have a capacity of around 15,000 spectators with all tribunes using single seats. Various modern facilities will also be built, including a royal box, lounge, West Sumatra Asprov PSSI office, media room, and a merchandise shop. Andre also responded to a proposal for the stadium design to feature the traditional Minangkabau gonjong roof shape. He stated that the current design was prepared based on the proposal from the West Sumatra Provincial Government during the initial planning stages, making changes impossible. “The request for the gonjong is normal. But the public needs to know that this stadium design is in accordance with the provincial government’s request at the beginning of planning. There is no gonjong design. However, Minangkabau elements have been incorporated. If the design is changed now following the Deputy Governor’s request, it is impossible because it would hinder construction. The proposal should have been submitted from the start,” he said. The reconstruction of the Haji Agus Salim Stadium is the result of intensive communication and his efforts with the central government to secure budget allocation for a national-standard stadium in West Sumatra. “This is our initiation as a member of the House of Representatives to restructure this stadium. The construction is the result of our lobbying so that West Sumatra gets the budget to rebuild the Haji Agus Salim Stadium,” he stressed. Meanwhile, President Director of PT Hutama Karya Kuntjoro expressed appreciation to Andre Rosiade for his significant role in initiating the reconstruction of the pride of West Sumatra. “Thank you to Mr Andre who has initiated the reconstruction of the Agus Salim Stadium in Padang. Alhamdulillah, the Ministry of Public Works has appointed Hutama Karya together with Adhi Karya to carry out this project,” said Kuntjoro. Kuntjoro stated that Hutama Karya and PT Adhi Karya will work on the project through an Operation Cooperation (KSO) scheme with a 16-month implementation period. “We plan a 16-month implementation period. God willing, work can begin in September. Thus, the completion target is the end of December 2027 or no later than January 2028,” he said. During the construction process, Semen Padang FC will use an alternative stadium as their home ground until the new Gelora Haji Agus Salim Stadium is completed and ready for operation.
