Getting to Know the Tiban Sodo Purwo Tradition in Banyuwangi: More Than Just a Test of Skill

BANYUWANGI, KOMPAS.com - The sound of whips cracking filled the afternoon at the Wit-Witan Market, Karetan Village, Purwoharjo District, Banyuwangi, East Java.

In the middle of the arena, surrounded by crowds, two shirtless men faced each other, each holding a whip made of areca palm stalks.

This attraction is more than just a display of skill; the locals call it the art of ‘tiban.’ This tradition has been passed down through generations and has long been a part of life in the southern region of Banyuwangi.

The ‘tiban’ tradition was revived through an event called ‘Tiban Sodo Purwo,’ which took place in the Wit-Witan Market area until Sunday (17/5/2026).

In Banyuwangi, ‘tiban’ is not just seen as a form of entertainment. Historically, this tradition is known as a rain-calling ritual passed down by ancestors and continues to be preserved today.

During the performance, two players take turns whipping each other’s bodies with whips made from twisted areca palm stalks. Although it looks tough and extreme, the atmosphere in the arena is actually friendly.

After the match, the players usually shake hands and hug each other.

The event coordinator, Suharsoyo, said that the ‘Tiban Sodo Purwo’ event was held to ensure that local culture does not disappear in the face of the strong influence of modernisation.

“We are holding this event to preserve the traditional art of our ancestors so that it remains relevant and widely known,” said Suharsoyo on Friday (15/5/2026).

According to him, young people have an important role to play in preserving this tradition.

“Hopefully, future generations will not forget. This art must continue to be preserved. Even in this modern era, we must still uphold our own culture,” said Suharsoyo.
