JAKARTA — BYD Indonesia officially introduced its latest technology, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) named Dual Motor (DM), to the domestic market on Monday, 18 May 2026. The M6 model became the first product to adopt this technology. The company hopes this innovation can meet consumer needs who want vehicle efficiency without having to rely entirely on battery charging facilities, due to varied usage patterns ranging from daily urban mobility to intercity travel where charging infrastructure is not evenly distributed.

‘This technology is relevant for the Indonesian market, where usage patterns are highly varied, from daily urban mobility to intercity travel with charging infrastructure that is not yet evenly distributed,’ said Eagle Zhou during the launch on Monday. Head of Product PT BYD Motor Indonesia, Bobby Bharata, explained that the DM technology carries an electric-first philosophy. This means electric motors are the primary power source when the vehicle is in use, unlike conventional hybrid systems that rely more on internal combustion engines.

With this approach, the vehicle can run on electric power first. In everyday urban use, the vehicle can operate entirely in EV mode. In this mode, the wheels are driven entirely by electric motors with zero emissions and zero fuel consumption. This mode is considered suitable for densely urban traffic as it provides greater comfort compared with conventional vehicles. When battery capacity falls below a certain threshold, the system automatically switches to HEV Series. The wheels remain driven by the electric motor, so the driving character remains smooth like an EV. In addition, there is HEV Parallel mode, where electric motor and engine work together to deliver maximum performance.
