Getting to Know ALTNV, a New Tick-Borne Virus Discovered in China
Researchers in China have successfully identified a new virus linked to tick exposure. The virus, named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), was discovered through a study of patients who experienced fever symptoms after having a history of contact with ticks.
The findings on ALTNV have been published in the prestigious medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The research was conducted through hospital-based surveillance in China, targeting patients who showed clinical symptoms resembling tick-borne diseases.
During the study, scientists used genetic sequencing methods to identify a previously unknown pathogen. The analysis results showed that ALTNV is a new virus belonging to the genus Orthonairovirus and the family Nairoviridae.
Further genetic analysis revealed that this virus has significant differences from other known species within the same virus group. Researchers also successfully isolated the virus from patient samples, enabling a more in-depth characterisation of the pathogen’s properties.
Patients infected with ALTNV generally have a history of tick exposure and experience fever as the main symptom. However, as with viral infections in general, the symptoms that appear can vary from one individual to another. Researchers emphasised the importance of medical surveillance for patients who develop fever after a tick bite.
Although the virus has been discovered, experts state that the existence of ALTNV does not mean every tick bite will result in infection. The risk of transmission is influenced by several key factors.
Given that ticks can carry various types of dangerous pathogens, the public is urged to take basic preventive measures, especially when in grassy or forested areas that serve as tick habitats. Several recommended steps include using protective clothing and insect repellent.
The discovery of ALTNV serves as a reminder that research on tick-borne diseases continues to evolve. At present, further studies are still needed to understand transmission patterns, risk levels, and the long-term impact of this virus on human health overall.
