Getting rid of hoodlums
Getting rid of hoodlums
From Suara Karya
I believe all of us, the residents of Jakarta, highly appreciate the plan by the Jakarta Administration to eliminate hoodlums in the city. The only reason for eliminating them is the fact that crimes on the increase mostly involve hoodlums in the street and in public places.
Considering that they operate in gangs and that there is a very limited number of policemen on duty, the efforts to eliminate them have hitherto not been very successful.
I therefore would like to propose that selected members of self defense schools be invited to participate in the police program aimed at eliminating hoodlums in Jakarta. The involvement of those with karate, tae kwon do, judo and martial art skills though, should be within the control, supervision and guidance of the police.
For example, they might be expected to prevent crimes like robbery, rape, and theft. They might also arrest suspects and hand them in to the nearest police station for further questioning. However, in executing their task of fighting the hoodlums they should not take the law into their own hands.
For this purpose, I believe the public at large would be willing to fully support any fundraising that is properly and openly organized for this purpose by the Jakarta administration.
