Germany strengthens cooperation in Indonesia's energy transition
Germany is strengthening cooperation with Indonesia to accelerate the energy transition through renewable energy investment, modernisation of the electricity grid, and partnerships with the business community.
Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali Radovan, said the commitment was one of the focuses of her visit to Indonesia on 18–20 August, together with a business delegation from companies operating in the sustainable energy sector.
Minister Radovan, who is responsible for Germany’s development cooperation with Indonesia as well as Germany’s role as one of the co-leads in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), said the visit was aimed at expanding government and business partnerships between the two countries.
“During this visit, I want to launch new partnerships with the Indonesian Government and German companies, and make it easier for German companies to enter the Indonesian market. Through development cooperation, we are supporting Indonesia in carrying out its energy transition,” she said when confirmed after visiting Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to Radovan, Indonesia is a key partner for Germany and is among nine new focus countries whose cooperation ties Germany wishes to strengthen, particularly through the involvement of German businesses in development policy.
“We are investing in renewable energy and modern electricity grids. This contributes to climate protection, creates new jobs in Indonesia, and opens up new opportunities for German companies. Both countries will benefit from closer cooperation,” she said.
On the same occasion, German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste said Germany has a range of solutions to offer in support of Indonesia’s needs in energy development and sustainability.
“This visit shows that Germany not only has a political commitment to Indonesia’s energy transition, but also has technical solutions ready to be implemented,” he said.
Radovan had earlier opened Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2026, the main conference in German-Indonesian cooperation in the energy sector. The event brought together policymakers, development partners, the private sector, academics, and civil society.
Through the forum, cooperation between the two countries is directed not only at strengthening political commitment to the energy transition, but also at promoting the implementation of technical solutions and opening up investment opportunities for the private sector.
JETP was launched in 2022 to mobilise financing to accelerate Indonesia’s clean energy transition and promote the use of affordable and clean energy so that it provides tangible benefits for the national economy.
The German Government, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the European Union are members of the International Partners Group (IPG), which is committed to supporting Indonesia’s JETP through development financing.
