Germany Overwhelmed as Russia Abruptly Halts Kazakhstan's Oil Supply, Here's the Reason

Russia will halt the supply of Kazakhstan’s oil to Germany through the Druzhba pipeline network starting from 1 May 2026. This policy was announced by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak amid increasingly complex energy dynamics in the European region. The decision will impact the oil flow that has previously served as an important source for Germany’s energy industry. Novak stated that the volume of Kazakhstan’s oil previously sent through the Druzhba pipeline to Germany will be redirected to other logistics routes deemed more feasible technically. “Starting from 1 May, the volume of Kazakhstan’s oil supply previously sent to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline will be redirected to other obstacle-free logistics routes,” said Novak, as reported by Xinhua, RTVI, and several Russian media outlets. He added that the decision is based on the limitations of the current technological capabilities. According to Novak, discussions regarding the change in distribution routes have been conducted with Kazakhstan in recent times. Negotiations between the two countries reportedly took place in the previous week, reflecting coordination in addressing changes in infrastructure conditions. In a statement with political undertones, Novak also alluded to Germany’s stance in rejecting Russian oil. “Germany has rejected Russian oil, which means everything is fine for them,” he said. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov had previously confirmed the suspension of oil transit through Russia to Germany. He stated that his country had received unofficial information regarding the possible halt of oil flow through the Druzhba pipeline in May.
