Germany involved in Ukraine negotiations, proposes its own initiatives

Moscow (ANTARA) - The German government has been involved in negotiations regarding Ukraine for several months and has proposed various initiatives of its own, stated German Cabinet spokesperson Stefan Kornelius on Wednesday.

Kornelius stated that the Federal Cabinet has been informed regarding the Ukrainian talks that took place last weekend. “The mere fact that these talks are taking place is a positive sign that is welcomed by the German government,” he said during a press conference in Berlin.

When asked about the possibility of Germany and its European partners proposing their own initiatives regarding Ukraine, Kornelius said that German authorities “have already participated in the negotiations with various initiatives over several months.”

Germany was represented in the talks in Kyiv by the Chancellor’s foreign policy and security adviser, he added. He also noted that the consultations were conducted privately and behind closed doors.

On 5 September, Russian President Vladimir Putin received US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin for talks that lasted approximately three hours. During the meeting, the Russian leader emphasised the need to eliminate the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, according to Kremlin official Yuri Ushlam.

After visiting Moscow, both special envoys continued discussions with Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. The Ukrainian broadcasting station TSN reported that representatives from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany also joined the meeting.
