Germany Investigates Fatal Berlin Crash as Suspected Terror Attack

German law enforcement authorities are investigating a crash that struck a crowd in central Berlin as a suspected terrorist attack, according to the Bild newspaper on Sunday. The incident on Saturday evening in the Tiergarten area occurred during an event attended by hundreds of thousands of people. A driver of a white van ploughed into the crowd before crashing into a tree and fleeing the scene. According to the latest data, one woman was killed and 25 others were injured. The main suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdul Ballut, is reported to be a supporter of the ISIS group, Bild reported. Local security authorities reportedly have extensive information regarding the incident’s links to radical groups, as well as his religious ideology. According to the newspaper, Abdul Ballut had previously come to the attention of police in cases involving serious assault and extortion. Earlier reports indicated that Ballut is a German citizen of Lebanese descent. According to Die Welt newspaper, Ballut was released from a youth correctional facility in May.
