Germany Accuses Russia of Responsibility for Drone Attack Attempts

The German government has accused Russia of being behind attempted drone attacks targeting several airports in the European Union last month.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport on 4 August involved drones suspected of carrying explosives. According to him, the modus operandi bears similarities to the hybrid operation patterns previously linked to Russia.

Dobrindt stated that investigations found indications that the agents operating the drones were acting on behalf of Russian state entities. “When combined, the results of police investigations, the pattern of criminal activity, and intelligence findings prove that Russia is responsible for the attempted attacks,” Dobrindt said, as reported by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (2/9).

These allegations come as several European nations report an increase in cases of sabotage and various other attempts at disruption suspected of having links to Russia. Dobrindt assessed that the incident in Leipzig/Halle was not an isolated event. He linked the attack to several similar incidents occurring in other European countries and believes Russia is behind this series of attempts.

“This is consistent with the broader pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe,” he noted.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Berlin has prepared several measures in response to the incident. Germany has summoned the Russian Ambassador to convey the government’s stance regarding Moscow’s alleged involvement. Furthermore, Berlin plans to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn as well as the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin.

The German government is also reported to be preparing additional sanctions against Russia and tightening travel restrictions for Russian citizens.

These steps have drawn a response from the Russian Foreign Ministry. Moscow condemned Berlin’s actions and asserted that it would respond to what it described as an anti-Russian stance.

Germany’s accusations add to the tension between Berlin and Moscow amidst growing concerns among European nations regarding activities involving sabotage, infrastructure disruption, and hybrid operations suspected of being linked to Russia.
