German president visits Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR AP): German President Roman Herzog arrived yesterday for a five-day state visit aimed at strengthening relations with Malaysia.
Herzog was greeted in a formal welcoming ceremony in front of Parliament House by Malaysian King Ja'afar Abdul Rahman and other senior leaders.
Herzog was to meet with the king formally later and attend a banquet. He also is to confer with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, visit the Palm Oil Research Institute and visit a mosque.
He also is to visit Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state on Borneo, and meet with Governor Ahmad Zaidi Adruce. Malaysia exported US$2 billion worth of goods to Germany and imported $1.75 billion worth in the first nine months of 1996.
There are about 200 German companies operating in Malaysia.
