Berlin (ANTARA) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday (24/3) described the military attack launched by the United States (US) and Israel against Iran as a violation of international law and a fatal political mistake.

Speaking at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the re-establishment of Germany’s Foreign Ministry, Steinmeier said that the war could have been avoided and was unnecessary if the goal was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Steinmeier stated that international law remains the regulatory framework, guideline, and source of legitimacy for Germany and Europe. Europe would lose its way in a world without law and rules, because the European Union itself is built on that foundation, he said.

Steinmeier highlighted the deep divisions that have emerged in transatlantic relations since the start of US President Donald Trump’s second term, and called for Germany and its European partners to reduce dependencies that make us vulnerable, particularly in the areas of security and technology.

“Realising European sovereignty in defence and technology is a project that will take several generations to complete,” said Steinmeier, emphasising that the magnitude of this task should no longer be used as an excuse for delay.
