German National Deported After Researching Sulawesi Flora Without Permit
The Class I Special Immigration Office in Palu, Central Sulawesi, has deported a German national named Vlad Alexandru Tataru after he was found to have conducted research without official permission in the Lore Lindu National Park area. The head of the Palu Class I Special Immigration Office, Muhammad Akmal, stated that the administrative action was taken following the discovery of an immigration violation by the individual. “The individual entered Indonesian territory using a Visa on Arrival (VoA), which is not intended for research activities,” Akmal said in Palu on Monday, citing Antara. During the examination process, Vlad was found to have collected several endemic flora from the national park area without holding permission from the relevant agencies. He was also caught carrying plant samples from his field collection, including without approval from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Akmal emphasised that such actions constitute a serious violation, both in terms of immigration and the protection of Indonesia’s biological natural resources. “We take firm action against every immigration violation, including the misuse of stay permits. Research activities in Indonesia have procedures and permits that must be followed,” he said. He added that this firm step is not only law enforcement but also part of efforts to maintain national sovereignty, particularly in protecting Indonesia’s biological wealth from unlawful exploitation. Based on the examination results and applicable legal provisions, Vlad Alexandru Tataru was subjected to deportation. His name has also been added to the blacklist, preventing him from re-entering Indonesian territory for a certain period. The Palu Immigration Office urges all foreign nationals in Indonesia to comply with immigration regulations and permit requirements, especially regarding research activities and the taking of natural resource samples. This measure is expected to serve as a deterrent and increase awareness of the importance of legal compliance to preserve and maintain the sovereignty of Indonesia’s natural resources.
