German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that the United States will not station Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany for the time being. According to him, this is because America does not have enough of those missiles for itself. “America does not have enough weapons for itself at the moment. Objectively, there is almost no possibility for America to supply such a weapons system,” Merz told the public broadcaster ARD, as reported on Monday. The missiles, promised by former US President Joe Biden in 2024, were intended to strengthen Germany’s deterrence capabilities until Europe develops its own system. Merz then described the announcement of the withdrawal of more than 5,000 US troops from Germany as “nothing new” and noted that the contingent was temporarily stationed under the Biden administration and its withdrawal has been discussed for some time. The Chancellor denied any connection between Trump’s announcement and his critical statements regarding the US war against Iran, including his remark that Iran had “humiliated” the US at the negotiating table. “There is no connection,” said Merz. “I will also not give up on working with Donald Trump,” he added. Regarding the sharing of US nuclear weapons within NATO, Merz assured that “there is absolutely no compromise” and “no limitations on the US commitment to nuclear deterrence in the NATO area.” Merz reaffirmed that “America is our most important partner in the North Atlantic Alliance.”
