German Chancellor Merz Admits Iran Has Embarrassed America, Tehran is Highly Skilled in Negotiations
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Monday that Iran’s leadership has humiliated the United States. Iran made US officials travel to Pakistan and then leave without any results. Merz also does not see any exit strategy that the US is pursuing in the war with Iran.
“It is clear that Iran is very skilled in negotiating, or more precisely, very skilled in not negotiating, letting America travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any results,” he said while speaking to students in the city of Marsberg, as reported by NDTV on Monday.
“The entire nation has been humiliated by Iran’s leadership, especially by what is called the Revolutionary Guard. And therefore, I hope this ends as soon as possible,” he added at the location in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Merz’s comments underscore the deep divisions between Washington and its European NATO allies, which have worsened over Ukraine and other issues.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly harshly criticised NATO allies for not sending their navies to help open the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.
That waterway remains practically closed, causing market chaos and unprecedented energy supply disruptions.
Merz reiterated that Germany and Europe were not consulted before the US and Israel began attacking Iran on 28 February. Germany, he said, had conveyed its doubts directly to Trump afterwards.
“If I had known that this would continue like this for five or six weeks and get worse, I would have told him more firmly,” said Merz, comparing it to previous US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
