Berlin (ANTARA) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday (27/3) questioned the effectiveness of United States (US) and Israeli military operations in Iran.

“I am not convinced that what Israel and the US are doing at the moment will really succeed,” he stated at a conference in Frankfurt.

He expressed doubt “whether there is a strategy and whether that strategy is being implemented well.”

“In this case, the situation could last longer and is unlikely to improve,” he added.

Merz said the US and Israel “are becoming increasingly entangled” in the war against Iran. He warned that the two allied countries would not be able to effect a change of government in Iran, if that is their goal.

Merz also stated that US President Donald Trump has understood that the war in Iran is not a NATO war, so Germany cannot help.

“However, we have offered to coordinate, for example, military protection in the Strait of Hormuz with other parties if a ceasefire occurs,” he said.

According to Merz, German involvement would require an international mandate as well as approval from parliament (Bundestag) and a cabinet decision.

“We are still far from that, and as long as the war continues, it is not an option for us,” he said.

Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise since the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February.

Iran then launched retaliatory strikes on Israel as well as Gulf states hosting US military assets.
