Gerindra reveals coalition parties agree on 5 per cent parliamentary threshold
The Secretary General of the Gerindra Party Central Executive Board, Sugiono, stated that his party has agreed to a parliamentary threshold (PT) of five per cent during discussions concerning the revision of the Election Law.
Speaking at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, Sugiono noted that the figure was discussed during a meeting of chairpersons from political parties within the government coalition. The meeting took place while he was accompanying President Prabowo Subianto on a working visit to New Delhi, India.
“It appears everyone is in agreement, though I cannot speak on behalf of other parties. However, Gerindra also agrees on the 5 per cent PT. As mentioned yesterday, Golkar has also expressed this, as has PKS, and I believe that is what we have agreed upon,” he said.
According to Sugiono, Gerindra was represented at the meeting by the Daily Chairperson of the Gerindra Party Central Executive Board, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.
He added that the chairpersons of the government coalition parties will convene again to discuss several other matters related to the revision of the Election Law. However, Sugiono could not yet confirm when the discussions regarding the legislative revision would officially commence in the House of Representatives (DPR RI).
“That was what was discussed yesterday. Ultimately, we will gather again to reach an agreement,” he said.
Sugiono confirmed that the presidential threshold has not yet been discussed in the meeting. In addition to the parliamentary threshold, he noted that several other issues were addressed during the meeting of the government coalition chairpersons.
These discussions included efforts to make the implementation of elections more effective and efficient, as well as ensuring that voter voices are optimally accommodated.
“Furthermore, we are looking at how the voices of the people—or whatever remains—can still be well accommodated,” he said. Sugiono emphasised that every vote in an election represents the aspirations of the people and must be managed to ensure optimal representation.
Separately, the Golkar Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) also expressed their agreement regarding a parliamentary threshold of approximately 5 per cent during a meeting between the two parties in Jakarta on Monday (14/9).
The Secretary General of the Golkar Party, Muhammad Sarmuji, previously stated that a figure of around 5 per cent is considered moderate for implementation as the parliamentary threshold in the upcoming legislative elections. The meeting between Golkar and PKS also addressed several points regarding the planned revision of the Election Law.
