The Gerindra Party’s Ethics Council has issued a written reprimand to the Chairman of the Riau Islands Regional People’s Representative Council, Iman Sutiawan, for violating traffic regulations by riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle without wearing a helmet. The incident was recorded in a video that went viral on social media and was widely condemned by the public.
This incident then became the basis for the Gerindra Party’s Ethics Council to make a decision, which was read by the chairman of the session, M. Maulana Bungaran, at the Gerindra Central Executive Board office in South Jakarta, Friday, May 15, 2026.
“Stating that Brother Iman Sutiawan, as a Gerindra Party member, has been proven to have violated the Gerindra Party’s Articles of Association and Bylaws,” said Maulana while reading the verdict number 05-003/PTS/MK.Gerindra/2026 in the Gerindra DPP session room.
Maulana said that the Gerindra Party’s Ethics Council had examined Iman, witnesses, complainants, and evidence on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Iman was also considered to have violated Article 16 paragraph 3 of the Articles of Association which instructs members to uphold the Articles of Association and Bylaws as well as the regulations of Gerindra. Thirdly, Iman was declared to have violated Article 67 paragraph 5 of the Articles of Association regarding the member’s oath which states that he is subject to and obeys the party’s ideology and discipline and maintains the party’s honor, dignity, and solidarity.
“Giving a written reprimand to Brother Iman Sutiawan, a member of the Gerindra Party faction in the Riau Islands Provincial DPRD,” said Maulana.
The video of Iman riding a Harley-Davidson FXDR motorcycle with license plate BP-6215-VF without a helmet was uploaded to the Instagram account @iman_sutiawan75 on Saturday, May 9, 2026. After receiving public criticism, the video was then deleted from his personal account.
Later, the Traffic Unit of the Barelang City Police imposed a fine on Iman for not complying with traffic rules in the Rosedale intersection area, Batam Center. Iman was fined Rp 500 thousand for two types of violations, namely not wearing a helmet and not carrying a driver’s license.
