Gerindra: Prabowo and Megawati’s Hand-Holding Symbolises Strong Friendship
President Prabowo Subianto and former Indonesian President and BPIP Steering Council Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri held hands during the Pancasila Day ceremony. Gerindra Party spokesperson Bahtra Banong said the moment reflected the solidarity and togetherness of national leaders. ‘I see this as very positive. National leaders are demonstrating solidarity and togetherness, especially amid the challenges posed by uncertain global geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics,’ Bahtra told reporters on Monday, June 1, 2026. The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Second Commission added that Prabowo shows respect for previous leaders, which he said is a hallmark of Prabowo’s leadership style that prioritises unity and mutual cooperation. ‘We should also be grateful to have a leader like President Prabowo who consistently honours past leaders. This is one of his distinctive leadership traits: prioritising unity, mutual cooperation, and a shoulder-to-shoulder spirit in nation-building,’ he said. Bahtra said the hand-holding moment between Prabowo and Megawati reflects their long-standing good relationship. He added that the two national figures share strong emotional bonds and friendship. ‘Moreover, this political communication through hand-holding demonstrates that President Prabowo and Mrs Megawati have maintained a strong relationship for a long time,’ he said. ‘Both national figures share deep emotional connections and strong friendship, ensuring their communication and camaraderie remain intact for the sake of the nation,’ he added. The ceremony took place at the Pancasila Building courtyard, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Central Jakarta, on Monday, June 1, 2026. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming was also present. After the ceremony, another warm moment between Prabowo and Megawati was observed. Prabowo was initially seen conversing with former Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla (10th and 12th) and Ma’ruf Amin (13th), while Megawati was positioned behind them. Prabowo then gestured for Megawati, Kalla, and Ma’ruf Amin to proceed, but Megawati invited Prabowo to walk with her. Megawati was seen holding Prabowo’s hand, and the two walked together, laughing.
