Gerindra Legislator Urges Palembang MSMEs to Protect Business Trademarks
A member of the House of Representatives’ Commission XIII from the Gerindra Party faction, Kartika Sandra Desi, is encouraging the advancement of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Palembang City. She urged business owners to register their trademarks and service marks early. This step is considered crucial for providing legal certainty while strengthening product competitiveness amidst business rivalry.
Kartika provided direct guidance to MSME players, community leaders, and residents in Kertapati District, Palembang City. The socialisation event discussed the importance of intellectual property rights protection for the sustainability of long-term business activities. She stressed that a brand is not merely a name or decorative symbol attached to a product’s packaging.
The Gerindra Party figure stated that a brand is a crucial identity marker that distinguishes one’s goods or services from other entities. Legal protection for this asset is seen as a strategic step to fully safeguard the owner’s rights. This effort can also prevent the unauthorised use of a product name and increase its added value in the market.
‘A registered brand not only provides legal protection for its owner but also increases consumer confidence in the products and services offered. This is an important asset for business owners to grow, both nationally and internationally,’ Kartika Sandra Desi said in a written statement on Thursday (6/8/2026).
She further invited MSME players not to delay brand registration until their businesses have already become large. This legal protection should be prepared from the very beginning of the pioneering phase. The goal is to ensure that a painstakingly built business identity is protected from potential legal problems in the future.
Kartika noted that many local business owners successfully produce high-quality products but neglect the legal aspects. They lack legal protection because their trademarks have not been officially registered with the authorities. This situation risks causing financial and reputational losses if their product identity is claimed first by another party.
Through this socialisation forum, participants received a comprehensive explanation of the various benefits of trademark registration. They were also taught the procedures for obtaining legal protection and the fatal risks of negligence in registration. This understanding of legal aspects is expected to become a crucial part of each participant’s business scaling strategy.
With a legally protected brand, MSME players are assured of a solid guarantee for their product identity. They will also be more confident in expanding their market reach and building customer loyalty in the future.
