Gerindra Issues Written Warning to Riau Islands DPRD Chairman Over Viral Harley Ride
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Gerindra party’s ethics council has issued a written warning to the chairman of the Riau Islands DPRD, Iman Sutiawan, after a video of him riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle without a helmet went viral on social media.
The decision was read out during a session of the Gerindra party’s ethics council held on Friday (15/5/2026).
“It was stated that Brother Iman Sutiawan, as a Gerindra party cadre, has been proven to have violated the Gerindra party’s constitution and bylaws,” said the chairman of the Gerindra party’s ethics council, M. Maulana Bungaran, while reading out the decision.
In the ethics hearing, the Gerindra ethics council stated that Iman had been proven to have violated several provisions of the Gerindra party’s constitution.
One of them is Article 16, paragraph 2 of the Gerindra party’s constitution, which regulates the obligation of cadres to uphold the party’s name and honour.
In addition, Iman was also deemed to have violated Article 16, paragraph 3, regarding the obligation to uphold the party’s constitution and bylaws, as well as Article 67, paragraph 5, concerning the cadre’s oath to maintain the party’s honour and dignity.
“The defendant clearly violated it,” said a member of the ethics council while reading out the considerations for the decision.
In the video uploaded to the social media account @iman_sutiawan75 on Saturday (9/5/2026), Iman is seen riding a large motorcycle while wearing a plaid shirt, jeans, and a black hat.
“Today we’re going to have some fun, a little refreshment,” said Iman in the video.
Based on the video recording, Iman appears to be crossing several main roads in Batam, starting from the Diponegoro road area towards Gajah Mada road to the Sei Ladi bridge.
The action then went viral on social media because it was considered a violation of traffic rules.
Later, the Batam Police Traffic Unit also issued a ticket to Iman Sutiawan for the traffic violation.
“In addition to being stopped for not wearing a helmet, officers also found that he was also not carrying a driver’s license, so we confiscated his vehicle registration certificate and issued a ticket,” said Anggoro, Monday (11/5/2026).
According to Anggoro, Iman was fined Rp 500,000 for the two traffic violations he committed.
He emphasized that the action was taken without any special treatment even though Iman was a public official and also the chairman of the Gerindra party’s Riau Islands branch.
“All citizens are equal in the eyes of the law. We do not look at rank. What we found in the field was a traffic violation. That’s what we are processing,” said Anggoro.
