Geological Agency: Mount Anak Krakatau Still Erupting

Mount Anak Krakatau remained under observation by the Geological Agency team as it erupted between Sunday (6/9) and Monday (7/9). The team recorded three eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau.

“During the period of 6-7 September 2026, 3 eruption earthquakes, 9 blowing earthquakes, 93 low-frequency earthquakes, 98 hybrid/multiphase earthquakes, 4 continuous tremor earthquakes and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake were recorded,” said the Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lana Saria, on Monday (7/9).

Lana said that the Strombolian eruptions, which are characteristic of Mount Anak Krakatau’s current activity, are for the time being interpreted as the end of a fairly long continuous eruption episode.

Nevertheless, the development of volcanic dynamics at Mount Anak Krakatau continues to be monitored and evaluated.

“The probability of an eruption in the coming periods remains high, with hazards in the form of incandescent rock ejecta accompanied by heavy ash rain, as well as the potential for lava flows if continuous eruptions resume,” she said.

Lana also urged the public not to enter or conduct activities within a 3 km radius of the centre of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity, and to remain vigilant against the threat of pyroclastic clouds, lava, incandescent rock ejecta and heavy ash rain.
