Geological Agency Inspects Earthquake, Tsunami and Ground Movement in NTT
The Geological Agency has reported three disaster events in the earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara. In addition to the earthquake, the other two events were a tsunami and ground movement.
The earthquake was reported to have impacted Nagekeo and Sikka regencies. Meanwhile, the tsunami affected Nagekeo, and ground movement occurred in Nagekeo, Sikka and Manggarai.
In the earthquake event in Nagekeo, the Geological Agency found building damage that required residents to evacuate. “The public must remain in evacuation shelters until the condition of buildings is declared safe,” said Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria.
In Sikka, the Geological Agency found significant damage to a number of buildings. “Initial needs include further assessment of building suitability, securing parts of damaged buildings that could pose a danger, and providing materials for repairing affected homes,” Lana added.
Regarding the tsunami in Nagekeo, the Geological Agency found tsunami traces in the form of inundation with a depth of around 0.5 metres, a run-up height of around 1 metre, and water reach of 100–150 metres. “In Marapokot, 240 people from 80 households were recorded as displaced, while in Anakoli 703 people from 187 households were recorded. There were no fatalities,” she explained.
Meanwhile, ground movement in Nagekeo caused cracks in the road surface at Marapokot Port. “Immediate handling and repair are required,” Lana stressed.
In Sikka, ground movement caused landslides of soil and rock material and slope collapse in several locations. In Manggarai, landslide material was found on slopes that could potentially affect slope conditions and the surrounding environment.
