Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) confirmed no indication of dangerous volcanic gas at Glamping Posong tourist site in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, following the discovery of four deaths at the location.

Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, stated on Friday in Jakarta that her agency had conducted field checks and gas concentration measurements to assess the environmental conditions around the incident site.

Measurements were carried out using the Geological Agency’s gas detectors to determine potential influence from Mount Sindoro’s volcanic gases or natural gas on the incident location.

Results from multiple measurement points showed carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration at 0.03 percent, while hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) were detected at 0 ppm.

‘Based on preliminary measurements at the inspection site, there is no indication of dangerous volcanic gas concentrations in the measured area,’ she said.

She added that Mount Sindoro is currently at normal activity level (Level I), urging the public to remain calm and await further investigation by authorities regarding the exact cause of death.

‘Vegetation around the site was observed to be normal with no signs of damage from hazardous gas exposure,’ she added.

Temanggung Police Department is handling the case of four tourists, a family, who died while camping at the natural attraction on Wednesday (27 May). Initial police reports suggested the victims died after inhaling hazardous gas, prompting a crime scene investigation and forensic laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of death.
