The assumption that obesity is purely an unchangeable genetic inheritance has been refuted by a health expert. Clinical nutrition specialist Dr. Maryam, Sp.GK, emphasised that genetic factors are not the primary cause of obesity.

Speaking at a media seminar titled ‘Comprehensive Aesthetic and Wellness: Integrated and holistic approach to better wellbeing’ in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6), Dr. Maryam explained that the influence of heredity on excess weight is estimated to be less than 20 percent.

‘Don’t let there be an assumption, “Doctor, everyone in my family is fat, so it seems impossible for me to lose weight.” Genetics can have an influence, but it’s less than 20 percent,’ she said.

According to the University of Indonesia graduate, obesity is a complex condition influenced by various aspects, ranging from physical, metabolic, and hormonal to psychological factors. However, the most dominant and modifiable factors are lifestyle and environment.

She stressed that diet, physical activity, and daily habits play a key role in weight management. ‘There is much we can change, one of which is environmental or lifestyle factors,’ she added.

Dr. Maryam also clarified the definition of obesity itself. She explained that obesity is not simply measured by the number on a scale, but is closely related to body composition.

‘Obesity is not excess body weight, but excess body fat,’ she asserted.

This condition also explains the ‘skinny fat’ phenomenon, where a person appears physically thin but has a high body fat percentage. Therefore, weight loss efforts must be personalised and based on objective measurements to ensure that fat, not muscle mass, is reduced.

By understanding that genetic factors play a small role, the public is expected to be more optimistic about pursuing a healthy lifestyle transformation. A holistic approach to treating obesity not only improves aesthetic appearance but also enhances overall quality of life in the long term.
