Generals fight for gubernatorial post

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Three active major generals have entered
the race for the much-coveted gubernatorial post for the
1998/2003 period.

They are T. Rizal Nurdin, chief of the regional military
command; Luhut Panjaitan, chief of the Bandung-based military
training and education center, and Sabar Pakpahan, an official at
the National Resilience Institute in Jakarta.

Previously, the candidacy was dominated by retired major
generals Syamsir Siregar, former chief of the Armed Forces
Intelligence Body (BIA), and Raja Kami Sembiring Meliala, a
former House of Representatives member. Brig. Gen. (ret) Mudyono
and Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Imran Siregar were also on the list.
