General elections
General elections
From Media Indonesia
If President Abdurrahman Wahid is considered a failure, the
People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) which elected him has also
made a mistake. If the President withdraws before termination of
his term of office, the MPR should be dissolved and a new general
election held to open a new page of democratic development. If
the MPR is not dissolved, it means that this institution has made
an authoritarian step and insulted democracy as well as doubting
the legal certainty.
Indonesia's messy current politics can be solved, for example
by letting the President issue a presidential decree to dissolve
the MPR and order that a general election be held. Thereafter the
President will transfer his power to the Vice President, and the
new President will have the duty to conduct a general election
within a given time, so that a new page is created in the
implementation of democracy.
