BANGKOK (AP): Myanmar's intelligence chief, Gen. Khin Nyunt, attended a program of Christmas carol singing in Yangon to raise money for the Myanmar Institute of Christian Theology, a government press release said on Sunday.
Khin Nyunt, who attended the program on Saturday evening, is one of the four most powerful generals in the military government of Myanmar, also known as Burma. Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country.
Two years ago, Myanmar's state-run press sharply criticized opposition leader and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi for attending a Christmas celebration for one of her party members who happened to be Christian.
Government newspapers attacked Suu Kyi for attending an event which they characterized as disrespectful of Buddhism and Myanmar's traditional culture.
