Gender confusion in BICC toilets

Gender confusion in BICC toilets

Although the UN meeting in Bali has proceeded for more than one week, many delegates are still confused as they attempt to enter the restrooms at the Bali International Convention Center.

Many foreign and Indonesian delegates were seen on Monday visibly hesitant about which door to enter as the small cryptic male and female symbols were apparently difficult to distinguish.

Yanuar Nugroho, the secretary general of the Social Democrats Union, an non-governmental organization, admitted that the unique Bali-style mask symbol had confused him as well.

Unlike most public restrooms, the BICC only has the traditional mask symbols, which do not include the body of the figures representing gender.

"It is quite hard to differentiate between the male and female figures represented by the mask. Moreover, the male mask wears an earring as well," said Yanuar.
