Gen Z Rejects Promotions and Overtime, Prioritising Work-Life Balance
In the midst of a modern work culture synonymous with long hours, relentless skill development, and ambitions to chase promotions, Generation Z (Gen Z) holds a different view on the meaning of success in the workplace.
A Gen Z employee drew attention after rejecting a job promotion offer because it would tie them to longer working hours. The story, shared by career coach Simon Ingari on his X account, quickly went viral and sparked lengthy discussions about the changing perspectives of young people towards the world of work.
According to Simon Ingari, the incident began when a manager offered a promotion to one of his Gen Z workers to fill a managerial position. This new role would involve longer hours, meaning overtime beyond the standard 40 hours per week.
Instead of accepting this golden opportunity, the employee calmly declined the promotion. He stated that he was not interested in taking on additional responsibilities that would sacrifice his personal time.
The decision shocked the manager. According to the manager, promotions and career development should be the common goal of every worker, but this Gen Z employee stood firm in his stance.
βHe explained that he was already comfortable with his current position and greatly valued the balance between work and personal life,β Simon Ingari wrote on X, quoted from The Economic Times on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
Of course, the promotion also offered a salary increase, but the Gen Z employee described by Simon Ingari weighed other consequences. From higher workloads, increased pressure, and reduced time for personal life (work-life balance).
For Gen Z, the benefits offered were not worth the sacrifices required. The debate even led to a moment of silence in the discussion because the manager struggled to understand his perspective.
This young employee also emphasised that the definition of success is not the same for everyone. While some people view success as promotions and rapid career progression, others define it as stability, happiness, and a more balanced quality of life.
