Jakarta, VIVA – Many perceptions label Generation Z, or Gen Z, as lacking work ethic because they are unaccustomed to overtime, refuse to reply to office messages outside working hours, and dare to question superiors. However, this view is increasingly being debunked by recent research. Rather than being seen as lazy, Gen Z is evaluated as redefining the meaning of discipline in work. They prioritise efficiency, healthy boundaries between work and personal life, and more directed work over an endless culture of overtime. For some previous generations, closing a laptop exactly at 6:00 PM might seem unambitious. But for Gen Z, this is a form of discipline. This concept differs from traditional discipline, which is synonymous with long working hours and visible busyness. Now, discipline is more interpreted as the ability to work effectively within healthy limits. One of the most prominent forms of discipline is regarding working time. Gen Z focuses more on outcomes rather than the number of hours worked. This was revealed in research titled ‘Redefining Work Ethic: Why Gen Z Values Efficiency Over Exhaustion’. Citing India Today on Sunday, 19 April 2026, the research shows that Gen Z prefers completing work effectively rather than lingering in the office just to appear diligent. They are also known to be firmer about boundaries between office matters and personal life, so they do not always feel obligated to respond to work messages outside office hours. This is supported by the study ‘A Study on Impact of Gig Economy on Work-Life Balance of Gen Z Employees’, which indicates that exposure to flexible work culture makes the younger generation more aware of mental health risks. However, these boundaries are not rigid. This means the boundaries set are not a rejection of work, but a form of awareness to maintain life balance. Another thing often misunderstood is Gen Z’s habit of questioning superiors’ decisions. Many view this as a lack of respect. In fact, for them, asking is a form of engagement.
