Gen Z favours vertical housing for proximity to city centres

Generation Z prefers vertical housing because it is close to the city centre, according to the Founder and CEO of Architect WOW, Ikhlas Miftah. “Usually it’s apartments. Apartments where Gen Z friends struggle to own comfortable, affordable property. Moreover, Gen Z really likes the city centre. There are cafes, restaurants, hangout spots,” Ikhlas Miftah said in Tangerang Regency, Banten, on Saturday. He noted that Gen Z currently finds it difficult to seek landed houses because these are located on the outskirts of the city, making vertical housing such as apartments or flats the choice for Gen Z. Therefore, the construction of vertical housing, at minimum studio-type apartments close to the city centre and bustling areas, is necessary so Gen Z can have decent and affordable homes. “This will be very beneficial because with their limited means, they are still quite capable of paying the monthly instalments,” Ikhlas Miftah said. Owning a studio-type vertical housing unit close to the city also makes it easier for Gen Z to be near their workplaces. Gen Z is not a generation that overly concerns itself with having a spacious home. “They prefer it like that. Moreover, they don’t think a home has to be spacious. Sometimes one room, with a power socket, a TV, a streaming platform, and they are already happy. With online motorcycle taxi services and online food ordering, they prefer things like that,” he said. Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait has stated that housing provision in urban areas is directed through the construction of vertical housing. He said the problem of housing provision, especially in urban areas, is faced with limited land for home construction. This is also a directive from President Prabowo so that land is not overly used for housing and is instead directed towards vertical dwellings.
