Google has released a new feature in its AI chatbot Gemini. This feature allows users to “transfer memories” from other chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude. The feature, named “switching tools”, is designed to make it easier for users of AI chatbots who wish to switch to Gemini. Previously, when using a new chatbot, users generally had to retrain it from the beginning to match their preferences. With this feature, users no longer need to bother retraining Gemini. Through “memory transfer”, users can move their command history from ChatGPT to Gemini. As a result, Gemini can immediately understand the user’s important context, from interests, personal relationships, likes or dislikes, to background, based on data taken from the previous chatbot. The second method is using a special prompt. Users simply start the process on the Gemini page, then copy the provided instructions to the old chatbot. Those instructions will ask the old AI to summarise important information about the user in a specific format. The summary covers several categories, such as demographic information, interests and preferences, relationships, important activity history, to specific instructions previously given by the user. This summary result is then copied back to Gemini so the system can comprehensively understand the user’s context. With this approach, users can directly continue conversations without having to repeat the process from the beginning. However, there are several limitations. Uploaded files must be in ZIP format with a maximum size of 5 GB. After the transfer process is complete, the conversation history will appear in a special menu in Gemini AI. Users can also search or delete that data as needed. This feature is one of Google’s efforts to attract interest from users switching to Gemini AI. Currently, ChatGPT AI remains the largest in the chatbot market with around 900 million weekly active users and about 1 billion monthly active users. Meanwhile, Gemini has more than 750 million monthly active users.
