Gejayan-Demangan Gridlocked Amid Road Repairs

Road repairs on Jalan Affandi, also known as Gejayan, up to the Demangan area, which began on 13 July, have resulted in traffic congestion. Vehicles are queuing along the road section where a contraflow system has been implemented. Monitoring by detikJogja at the location around 5.45pm WIB on Thursday (16/7/2026) showed congestion on the section of Jalan Affandi undergoing repairs. The queue of vehicles stretched approximately 500 metres, from the Jalan Alamanda T-junction to the Gang Hortensia intersection and Jalan Selokan Mataram. Meanwhile, traffic flow on the road section not subject to the contraflow system was relatively smooth. In addition to the road repair works, the slowdown in vehicle flow was also triggered by vehicles entering and exiting from side alleys around the location. An angkringan vendor near the site, Mardi, said the congestion had been occurring for the past two days. ‘Yes, this has been causing jams since last night. It has been two days now. Sometimes the traffic backs up all the way to Ring Road (Condongcatur Intersection) from here,’ Mardi told detikJogja at the location on Thursday (16/7/2026). Mardi said the worst congestion usually occurs when repair work begins at night and during the evening rush hour. ‘Usually from 9pm onwards, and then from 4pm to 5pm it is quite bad, because of the bend entering the side alley. During the day, the jam is usually only around here,’ he said. It was previously reported that periodic maintenance on Jalan Affandi or Gejayan up to Demangan would be carried out starting 13 July. The official Instagram account of the Sleman Police Traffic Unit, @satlantas_sleman, stated that the periodic maintenance would last for 20 days, from Monday, 13 July 2026, from 9pm to 5am WIB. ‘Work will be accelerated at night from 9pm to 5am WIB to minimise daytime congestion,’ the post read. Consequently, traffic management will be implemented by fully closing the east-side lane. Vehicles from both directions will use the west-side lane under a contraflow system. ‘A total closure will be enforced on the east-side lane. Traffic flow will be diverted using a contraflow system on the west side. Field officers (flagmen) will be stationed on site to help direct motorists,’ the post continued. The Sleman Police Traffic Unit also urged road users to be more cautious when passing through the project area. Motorists are also asked to reduce speed and obey traffic signs and directions from officers on the ground. ‘Advice for road users: Please remain cautious, reduce speed when passing through the project area, and obey traffic signs and directions from officers on the ground. If possible, use alternative routes during the project to ensure a smoother journey,’ the post concluded.
