Gejayan-Demangan Gridlocked Amid Road Repairs
Road repairs on Jalan Affandi, also known as Gejayan, through to the Demangan area, which began on 13 July, have caused traffic congestion. Vehicles queued in long lines along the stretch subject to a contraflow system.
According to detikJogja’s observation at the location at around 5.45pm WIB on Thursday (16 July 2026), congestion occurred on the section of Jalan Affandi undergoing repairs. The queue of vehicles stretched some 500 metres, from the three-way junction at Jalan Alamanda to the junction of Gang Hortensia and Jalan Selokan Mataram.
Meanwhile, traffic on the sections not subject to contraflow remained relatively smooth. Beyond the roadworks themselves, the slowing of vehicles was also triggered by cars entering and leaving the alleyways around the site.
Mardi, an angkringan street vendor near the location, said the congestion had begun over the past two days.
“Yes, this has been causing jams since last night. It’s been two days now. Sometimes the congestion stretches from Ring Road (the Condongcatur four-way junction) all the way to here,” Mardi told detikJogja at the location on Thursday (16 July 2026).
Mardi said the worst congestion usually occurred when repair works began at night as well as during the evening rush hour.
“It’s usually from 9pm WIB onwards, and then between 4pm and 5pm WIB it gets quite bad, because that’s also when vehicles are turning into the alley. During the day the jams are usually only around here,” he said.
As previously reported, periodic maintenance works on Jalan Affandi, or Gejayan, through to Demangan were scheduled to begin on 13 July, accompanied by traffic management measures.
According to the official Instagram account of the Sleman Resort Police Traffic Unit (@satlantas_sleman), the periodic maintenance would be carried out for 20 days, starting from Monday, 13 July 2026, between 9pm and 5am WIB. detikJogja was granted permission to quote the post.
“The works will be accelerated at night from 9pm to 5am WIB in order to minimise congestion during the day,” wrote the Sleman Resort Police Traffic Unit account, as seen by detikJogja on Wednesday (8 July 2026).
Consequently, the Sleman Resort Police Traffic Unit implemented a traffic management scheme involving the full closure of the eastern carriageway, with vehicles from both directions using a contraflow system on the western carriageway.
“A total closure will be enforced on the eastern carriageway. Traffic will be diverted using a contraflow system on the western side. Field officers: flagmen will be stationed at the location to help direct motorists,” the post continued.
The Sleman Resort Police Traffic Unit also urged road users to exercise extra caution when passing through the project area. Riders were also asked to reduce their speed and obey signage as well as the directions of officers in the field.
“An appeal to road users: please remain careful, reduce your speed when passing through the project area, and comply with signs and the instructions of officers on the ground. If possible, please use alternative routes while the project is under way for the sake of a smoother journey,” the post concluded.
