Jakarta — Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Indonesia remain relatively limited, even though consumer interest is actually quite strong. This is reflected in the domestic sales performance of the Geely Starray EM-i. Sales were recorded over the period from November 2025 to January 2026. Of the total, the Pro variant recorded 76 units sold, while the Max variant sold 166 units. However, volumes are still not as high as those for pure electric vehicles.

‘Because, coincidentally, Geely’s Starray and EX5 models have similar body sizes and other features. So when comparing whether to buy an EV or a PHEV, the calculations come out,’ said Herlijoso, when met in Jakarta recently. He explained that consumers often compare PHEV models with pure electric cars such as the Geely EX5.

With similar dimensions and characteristics, operating costs and various incentives become important considerations. ‘The odd-even policy, the STNK (vehicle registration), which makes buying an EV seem more justified. That’s one of the challenges for us, because many consumers also consider the two models, and end up buying EV,’ said Herlijoso.

Nevertheless, Geely still sees opportunities for PHEV vehicles in Indonesia. This technology is considered still relevant for consumers who want fuel efficiency while maintaining flexibility of use without being wholly dependent on the electricity charging infrastructure.
