Geely challenges BYD with 2.2 MW charging technology

Geely Auto has officially introduced an artificial intelligence-based charging technology named “Geely Smart Charge”, supported by Geely’s large-scale energy model, Xingrui PowerMind.

According to Carnewschina, a key component of this technology is the latest Geely Smart Charge station, which features a peak power of up to 2,250 kW or 2.25 MW through a single charging connector, setting a new industry record.

According to Geely, the company integrates the Xingrui PowerMind energy model to provide three main functions: Extreme Charge, Smart Charge, and Auto Charge.

By utilising thermal prediction algorithms, the system can predict changes in battery temperature up to 30 seconds in advance and dynamically adjust the charging power. This is done to maintain the average battery temperature below 55 degrees Celsius and ensure peak temperatures remain below 65 degrees Celsius.

Based on testing data from the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC), the Lynk & Co 10 model equipped with this technology was able to achieve a peak charging power of 1,093 kW.

When charging from 10 per cent to 97 per cent, the battery temperature remained below 55 degrees Celsius for 57 per cent of the total charging time, with the maximum recorded temperature reaching 64 degrees Celsius.

Geely also introduced the latest generation of the Aegis Golden Brick ultra-short blade battery.

12C Battery: Used in the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001, this 395 mm battery features a peak charging rate of 12C. Under normal temperature conditions, the battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in approximately 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and from 10 per cent to 97 per cent in about 8 minutes and 40 seconds.

6C Battery: The 370 mm version, which debuted in the latest Geely Galaxy E5, features a peak charging rate of 6C and can charge from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in approximately 8 minutes and 25 seconds.

To support the implementation of this technology, Geely also announced a new incentive policy for users. The first owners of new models equipped with Geely Smart Charge technology will receive a charging allowance of 1,000 yuan (approximately Rp2.6 million) per year for two years, totalling 2,000 yuan (approximately Rp5.3 million). This incentive applies to vehicles purchased before 1 January 2028.

Furthermore, the battery warranty for both new and eligible older models has been increased from the previous 8 years or 150,000 km to 8 years or 200,000 km.

Geely introduced this technology in April this year and has previously reported on its development. As charging speeds reach the megawatt level, further improvements in charging time appear to be becoming increasingly limited. The charging speeds demonstrated in these tests were even noted to be slower than CATL’s third-generation Shenxing battery.

To compete with BYD, charging speed alone is insufficient, as the construction of charging stations is also a critical factor. BYD itself is set to complete the construction of 20,000 fast-charging stations this year.
