Geely and Renault Develop Powertrain Systems via Horse Powertrain
Horse Powertrain, a subsidiary of the joint venture between Geely and Renault, has introduced its latest plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain system, specifically designed for off-road vehicles with the capability to produce torque of up to 4,920 Nm.
Reports on Thursday (3/9) local time indicate that the system, named 3DHT200, integrates 13 components into a single unit and will make its debut in a large-scale SUV, the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700.
In the 3DHT200, Horse Powertrain combines two electric motors with a three-speed hybrid transmission. The P1 motor provides 110 kW of power and functions as both a starter and a generator, while the P3 motor produces 230 kW to provide the vehicle’s primary traction.
This configuration allows the system to adjust power sources based on driving conditions, including the need for high torque at low speeds when traversing difficult terrain.
The 4,920 Nm figure is one of the most striking aspects of this technology. However, this figure represents the torque available at the wheels after passing through the transmission and reduction system, rather than the torque generated directly by the internal combustion engine.
Horse Powertrain stated that the 3DHT200 was developed for off-road vehicle requirements and is capable of supporting climbing abilities on inclines of up to 45 degrees. The system is also claimed to be approximately 10 per cent more compact than conventional designs, thanks to the integration of various components into one unit.
With the combination of electric motors and a three-speed hybrid transmission, the 3DHT200 technology demonstrates a development direction for PHEVs that pursues not only fuel efficiency but also the capability to handle rugged terrain. The presence of this system also illustrates how hybrid technology is being directed to meet vehicle needs for more extreme usage, including off-road capable SUVs.
