The government is preparing a new chapter for the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex following the ongoing eviction of Hotel Sultan. President Joko Widodo has instructed the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) to draft a redesign and development masterplan for the strategic area. Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro stated that the president has given a direct mandate to Danantara to design the development direction for the complex. “We have asked Danantara to design or create a masterplan for the GBK area, which will later be presented or delivered by Danantara. The time given by the President to complete the masterplan is until it is finished by Danantara,” Juri told reporters at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta. However, the government has not yet disclosed the details of the concept being prepared. Juri was also not ready to explain which buildings would be retained, renovated, or demolished during the area’s reorganisation. “I cannot answer yet, let’s just wait, it will be conveyed later by Danantara,” he said. This reticence indicates that the government is still in the early stages of planning. One thing is certain, however: the development direction will be oriented towards public interest and the optimal utilisation of state assets. “That is the standard. Certainly, later… the important thing is for the public interest, for the nation and the state,” Juri said. Amid the drafting of the masterplan, the eviction process for Hotel Sultan is still ongoing. The Ministry of State Secretariat is currently completing the execution phase, which began on 18 June 2026 and is targeted for completion within 30 days. Once the eviction is complete, the government’s attention is not only on the physical assets of the area but also on the fate of the affected workers. Juri said the Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Centre (PPKGBK) is currently collecting data and verifying Hotel Sultan employees to map out possibilities for their re-empowerment in the future management of the GBK area. “They are currently being recorded and verified. Of course, they will be sorted, as there are permanent employees and daily workers. Then, what fields they have been working in. Later, the GBK management will facilitate them to be re-empowered,” he explained.
