Gayo Lues Official Resigns After Child's 'Flexing' Posts Go Viral
Nevirizal, the Assistant for Government and People’s Welfare at the Gayo Lues District Secretariat in Aceh, has resigned from his post. The decision follows a viral controversy triggered by his child, Dea Arranoya, who posted ‘flexing’ content on social media.
The posts, which circulated on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, showed Dea flaunting holidays in South Korea, Bangkok, and Europe. The child also shared screenshots of a family group chat, including discussions about plans to purchase a car. Another post featured a photograph of 15 jerrycans neatly arranged in a room next to a black car, with a caption stating, ‘My dad bought 15 jerrycans of fuel. Who knows which car he’s going to fill up next.’
The posts drew sharp public criticism as they were uploaded while the Gayo Lues region was still in a recovery phase following a disaster. In one of the leaked family conversations, Nevirizal mentioned he was in a disaster management meeting.
Nevirizal subsequently apologised to the government and the public, admitting he had been negligent in supervising his child’s social media activity. ‘I apologise to the government and to the public who have been hurt. This was unintentional on my child’s part, perhaps because she hasn’t reached that level of maturity,’ he said. He clarified that the holiday photos were from a trip his wife and child took in mid-2025 for a family member’s eye treatment, a trip he did not join. Regarding the fuel, he explained the 15 jerrycans were purchased in December for disaster relief efforts during a fuel shortage.
Three days after the posts went viral, Nevirizal announced his resignation. In a written statement, he said the decision was made with full awareness and responsibility due to the public attention generated by his family member’s behaviour, which had sparked polemic and affected public trust in the institution he served. He confirmed he had submitted his resignation letter to the Deputy Regent of Gayo Lues.
Dea Arranoya also issued a public apology in an open letter, acknowledging her mistake and stating the posts were a result of carelessness and immaturity. She confirmed she had deleted all related content from her social media accounts and pledged to be more humble and considerate in the future.
