The Assistant I of the Gayo Lues Regency Secretariat in Aceh, Nevirizal, has apologised to the public after his child’s social media posts showcasing a lavish lifestyle and the purchase of a large quantity of fuel in jerry cans went viral. The posts sparked public outcry for being deemed insensitive to the community’s condition, especially as Gayo Lues is still in a post-disaster recovery phase. Nevirizal expressed regret over the incident, attributing his child’s posts to a lack of understanding in using social media. “I apologise to the government and to the public who have been hurt, because this was unintentional on our child’s part, perhaps because their thinking hasn’t reached that point yet,” Nevirizal said when confirmed. Based on the circulating posts, Nevirizal’s child displayed several activities that drew public attention, including documentation of trips to South Korea, Bangkok, and several European countries. The posts also featured a screenshot of a family group chat discussing plans to buy a car. The biggest outcry came from another post showing more than a dozen jerry cans neatly arranged in a room next to a black car, with a caption stating they contained fuel. “My dad bought 15 jerry cans of fuel. I don’t know which car he’s going to fill up next,” the caption read. Responding to the controversy, Nevirizal clarified that the photos and activities his child posted were not recent events. He stated his family’s trip to South Korea took place in mid-2025, when his wife and child travelled with other family members for eye treatment. Nevirizal stressed that he did not join the group, nor did he accompany them on their trip to Europe.
