Gavel Falls! Plenary Session Designates Aceh Governance Bill as DPR Initiative Proposal

The plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has designated the Aceh Governance Bill as a DPR initiative proposal. All DPR factions agreed to the designation.

The plenary session was held at the DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (8/9/2026). Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco Ahmad initially asked the factions for their opinions on the Aceh Governance Bill.

The factions’ views were then submitted in writing. Dasco subsequently asked the attending members for their approval.

“Now the time has come for us to ask this honourable council session whether the Draft Law proposed by the DPR RI Legislative Body concerning the Governance of Aceh can be approved as a DPR initiative bill?” asked Dasco.

“Agreed,” the council members replied.

Earlier, the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR RI had approved the revision of the Aceh Governance Law into a House initiative bill. All political party factions in the DPR gave their approval.

The Baleg plenary meeting took place at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (26/5), led by Chair of Baleg Bob Hasan. Chair of the Special Committee (Panja) Iman Sukri initially stated that the committee had decided on 27 provisions for amendment in the Aceh Governance Bill. He said one of the main changes was the adjustment of the considerations regarding Aceh’s special autonomy as an implementation of the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding.

“The adjustment to the considerations in letter b of the philosophical basis reads as follows: ‘That the administration of special autonomy by the Aceh Government is one part of the implementation of the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding which needs to be optimised in order to deliver real impact on development and welfare in Aceh’,” said Iman.

In addition, the revision also covers the refinement of the definitions of mukim and gampong. It also includes changes concerning kelurahan (urban wards) and changes to the authority of the government.
