Bogor Regency (ANTARA) – Former TNI Commander Gatot Nurmantyo recalled former Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) and Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu as a leader who made seemingly impossible ideas a reality. Gatot made the remarks after paying respects at Ryamizard’s wake at Puri Wira Bhakti housing estate, Cikeas, Gunungputri, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Sunday.

According to Gatot, one of Ryamizard’s most notable leadership examples was driving road construction through the TNI Manunggal Membangun Desa (TMMD) programme in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami.

“He spearheaded the TMMD project to build a road from Banda Aceh to Teunom. Many believed it was impossible due to the tsunami-damaged routes,” Gatot said.

Despite on-ground challenges, Ryamizard insisted on proceeding with the programme. The result was a previously inaccessible route successfully connected as per target.

“He insisted it must be done, and it was ultimately achieved. The route was successfully connected by the deadline,” he said.

Gatot said the success reflected Ryamizard’s vision, which often surpassed those around him.

“I thought his ideas were beyond my comprehension, but his vision was credible and ultimately proven,” he said.

In addition to his grand vision, Ryamizard also made significant contributions to the development of the Army through the formation of combat units and enhancing soldiers’ capabilities.

“He also established the Raider Battalion. His efforts to professionalise the army were immense,” he said.

Gatot said Ryamizard’s ideas and policies laid the foundation for the Army’s ongoing development.

Ryamizard was a retired senior Army officer who served as Army Chief of Staff from 2002 to 2005.

During the administration of Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo, Ryamizard served as Defence Minister from 2014 to 2019.

Ryamizard Ryacudu died at the age of 75. As of Sunday night, mourners from family, military figures, government officials, and the public continued to visit the wake to pay their final respects.
