Gates Foundation Not Immune to Pressure, to Lay Off 500 Employees for Efficiency

Pressure for efficiency is not only affecting corporations but also the philanthropic institution owned by global billionaire Bill Gates. The Gates Foundation has announced plans to terminate employment contracts for around 500 employees as part of an efficiency strategy to save on operational costs.

This number equates to 20 percent, which will occur gradually until 2030. The decision to tighten costs must be made amid increasingly complex operational dynamics.

The Gates Foundation is striving to maintain budget sustainability, set at around US$9 billion in 2026, with an operational cost limit of US$1.25 billion.

CEO of the Gates Foundation, Mark Suzman, acknowledged that this decision is not easy. However, the layoffs are deemed important to preserve the organisation’s direction moving forward.

“This is a challenging time for our organisation in many ways, but it also underscores the importance of taking difficult steps now,” he stated in an internal memo to employees, quoted from CNBC International on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

The foundation’s side emphasised that the announcement regarding cost cuts and the review is not a new policy. This is part of an internal update that was previously communicated to the public.

On the other hand, scrutiny of Bill Gates’ relationship with Epstein has resurfaced. Gates has previously apologised to staff for his association with Epstein, though he insisted he was not involved in any illegal activities.

Thus, the Gates Foundation is conducting an external review of its past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. This step is part of efforts to improve transparency and stronger governance.

“I did not do anything illegal. I also do not see any violations,” said Gates.

Pressure on this issue has also spread to the global business elite circle. Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett even admitted to keeping his distance from Gates since details of communications with Epstein were revealed to the public.

Amid various challenges and global uncertainties, the efficiency steps taken by the Gates Foundation reflect a global trend that even giant philanthropic organisations are not immune to pressures to operate more streamlined and adaptive.
