Gaspol Today: Who Is in Surya Paloh’s Heart, Jokowi, Anies or Prabowo?

JAKARTA — Willy Aditya, a member of the DPP NasDem Party, revealed the relationship between NasDem’s general chairman Surya Paloh and both the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and President Prabowo Subianto. He said that Surya and Prabowo share similar character, and therefore must move in tandem or in an equivalent position. ‘With Mr Prabowo they are both alphas; they walk side by side when both are alphas. An alpha cannot be in front or behind; that won’t work,’ Willy said in the Gaspol! podcast, which streams on Kompas.com’s YouTube channel, on Thursday, 21 June 2026. He recalled the story when Jokowi was seeking to run in the 2014 presidential election. At that time, Surya decided NasDem would be the first party to support Jokowi, alongside the PDI-P. ‘Yes (the relationship with Jokowi) is about Surya’s willingness to be led,’ he said. On the other hand, NasDem has recently been said to be proposing the formation of a political bloc with the Gerindra Party. Meanwhile, Surya and NasDem have a good relationship with Anies Baswedan, who he had backed in the 2024 presidential election. Willy refrained from speculating about the possibility of NasDem continuing to back Anies in the 2029 presidential election if the political bloc with Gerindra ultimately materialises.
