Gaspol Today: Are Indonesia-Iran Relations at Their Lowest Point?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Former Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Dian Wirengjurit, stated that relations between Indonesia and Iran are not in good shape. In his view, this is due to several issues, one of which is Indonesia’s move to join the Board of Peace (BoP) alongside the United States and Israel. According to him, those two countries are the ones who started the war with Iran. “Relations between Indonesia and Iran are at the lowest point,” said Dian, in the Gaspol! podcast aired on Kompas.com’s YouTube channel, Friday (10/4/2026). “Abandoning (the principle of) non-alignment, abandoning the OIC, abandoning the D8, abandoning all mechanisms of developing countries to face Western countries in the economic context,” he said. Dian also believes the government must demonstrate a firm stance and support for Iran if it wants two Pertamina ships to be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. So far, he assesses, the government has not issued a statement condemning the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. “(The government) must regret the occurrence of this war. Yes (because there has been no firm stance from the government),” he said.
