Gas Source Suspected in Fatal Family Camping Incident in Temanggung
Four members of a family from Ambarawa, Semarang Regency, were found dead after allegedly succumbing to gas poisoning inside their tent while camping in Posong, Kledung District, Temanggung. Police have identified the suspected source of the gas responsible for the fatalities.
‘The suspicion remains (gas poisoning) as there have been no developments so far. We are now awaiting the results from Labfor and Biddokkes. Once official results are received, even unofficial ones will be accepted, but none have been received yet,’ said Temanggung Police Residency’s Reskrim Chief, Iptu I Komang Mahendra Deputra, cited by detikJateng on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
Komang stated that the gas is suspected to originate from burning charcoal briquettes for heating or from barbecue cooking. However, the police are still conducting further investigations.
‘What gas is it? It’s combustion gas. And what is the combustion from? There are two possibilities: burning charcoal for heating and cooking (barbecue). So two possibilities remain; there are no additional possibilities. To date, we have no evidence of other potential causes of death,’ Komang explained.
During the crime scene examination, police did not detect any gas odour.
‘No (smell of gas). Carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless, and tasteless. So it cannot be detected. Even if present, it would not be visible. Once the tent door is opened slightly during the crime scene investigation, oxygen would have already entered,’ he added.
