The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency, West Java, is monitoring the situation in the southern or coastal area of the regency after an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck with its epicentre off the southern coast of Sukabumi Regency on Sunday afternoon.

Secretary of the Garut BPBD, Abud Abdullah, confirmed the report from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding the earthquake south of Sukabumi. He stated that, as of now, the Garut region, which shares a coastline with Sukabumi, did not feel strong tremors from the event.

“Monitoring of the Garut area indicates it was not felt,” he said.

He reported that the BMKG stated the earthquake occurred on Sunday at 15:11:06 Western Indonesia Time, with updated parameters showing a magnitude of 4.8. The location was at sea, 79 kilometres southwest of Sukabumi Regency, at a depth of 52 kilometres.

He added that the BMKG report indicated the shallow earthquake in the seabed did not show any potential to generate a tsunami.

“Tsunami modelling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential,” he said.

He noted that the BMKG report stated tremors were felt in several areas, including Sukabumi, Cianjur, and Bandung.

The BMKG continues to monitor for aftershock activity and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public. The agency has urged the public to remain calm and not be swayed by unverified information, and to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged.
