A recipient of the Garuda Scholarship from South Tangerang, Imran, has successfully created a Peatland Robot, a prototype developed to detect fires beneath the soil surface while also carrying out initial suppression efforts. The pipe-shaped robot is equipped with various sensors and a Long Range (LoRa) communication system capable of transmitting data and activating a pump for initial firefighting when it detects indications of a fire. “It started in junior high school, then in senior high school I focused on Physics and Mathematics to deepen my knowledge of robotics, and here we are today,” he said. In addition to the Peatland Robot, the student from SMA Negeri 2 Kota Tangerang Selatan also developed an artificial intelligence-based application to assist in the early detection of oral and tongue cancer. Imran stated that he plans to continue developing his research interests by studying Electrical Engineering at KAIST. Responding to this, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto assessed the Peatland Robot prototype as a good initial step, to be further developed by considering technical requirements and field application. One of the concerns raised was the device’s coverage radius. “This is a good start, and it should be coordinated with relevant parties later to understand the needs, because the radius is also an issue,” he said. The Minister also advised that the opportunity provided by the Garuda Scholarship be used to broaden knowledge and experience while studying abroad. “It’s great to learn many things there. While the technology is very advanced, visit the laboratories often, learn many things, and also learn from the society and the excellent educational culture. I hope you finish well,” said Brian Yuliarto. The Garuda Scholarship is a programme aimed at providing the widest possible access and opportunities for achievement to Indonesia’s sons and daughters, as well as being part of the nation’s science and technology development ecosystem.
