National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is strengthening its service transformation through the implementation of a high-speed inflight connectivity pilot project on flight GA-XX. Through this trial, passengers can enjoy high-speed internet access during the flight to support various digital activities, including the experience of video calling at an altitude of more than 30,000 feet.

The pilot project was packaged under the ‘Sinyal Merdeka’ campaign, which embodies the spirit of independence through connectivity and innovation. As part of the activation, a reading of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia was broadcast live via the aircraft’s internet connectivity and played through the public address (PA) system, allowing all passengers in the cabin to follow it simultaneously.

In this pilot project, 81 passengers received special access to trial the high-speed inflight connectivity, representing 81 years of Indonesian independence while also forming part of the testing of Garuda Indonesia’s next-generation connectivity experience.

Garuda Indonesia President Director Glenny Kairupan said that the development of high-speed inflight connectivity is part of the company’s transformation to strengthen its service value proposition as a full-service airline while responding to the public’s need for increasingly seamless digital connectivity.

“Garuda Indonesia’s transformation is not only focused on strengthening its business and operational fundamentals, but also on how that transformation can be felt directly through a travel experience that is increasingly relevant for service users. High-speed inflight connectivity is one of the innovations we are preparing to deliver that added value,” Glenny explained in a statement on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.

“Through Sinyal Merdeka, we also wanted to present a different way of commemorating Indonesia’s independence. The Proclamation text broadcast live via the aircraft’s connectivity is a symbol that even at an altitude of more than 30,000 feet, Garuda Indonesia continues to carry the spirit of Indonesia to remain connected and move forward,” he continued.

Garuda Indonesia will test the readiness of the technology as well as the user experience in accessing high-speed connectivity during the flight. In addition to sending messages and accessing information, selected passengers can also try activities with higher connectivity requirements, including video calls during the flight.
